When I was last in Malta, I came across a small local car hire company called Drifter. I did not hire a car from them, but used their taxi service. The driver gave me his phone number and would pick me up pretty much at any time from anywhere was really helpful and friendly and I would highly recommend this service.

Malta's Busses
Other than hiring a car in Malta there are many other ways of getting around this small island. I have traveled throughout Malta and Gozo in the past without my own vehicle. Malta has a very efficient bus network that I would highly recommend. That is not only cheap, but also makes for a great way to sample more of the local day to day life of people living in Malta.

Taxi Service in Malta
Again I have often used a taxi service in Malta, especially when going out at night when there are less frequent bus services. Whilst much more expensive than using the buss, compared to hiring a taxi in London they are cheap.
