Because it has a seemingly endless supply of cheap oil, Dubai is unlike many other modern cities around the world in that their public transportation is not great, they do have a bus system but they rely heavily on personal vehicles for transportation and unless you want to spend alot of money on taxis, I would recommend that you hire a car in Dubai. Most of the well known car hire companies offer car rental in Dubai and because of the competition, they all seem to offer pretty similar and competitive prices. I would look out for any sales or deals to get a cheaper price.

Public Transportation in Dubai

Busses in Dubai

There is a pretty large Bus network in Dubai that is operated by the Dubai Municipality. The network has around 59 unique routes on weekdays and transports about 200,000 people every week.

If you plan to use the busses often a good tip is to purchase swipable "e-go" cards which offer you period discounts. It must be said that the busses are pretty much only used by a small proportion of the population and mostly the poor with richer citizens mostly using private vehicles, traffic congestion has recently become a major problem in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates.

Dubai has also the unenviable reputation for having the most number of deaths and road accidents in the developed world with a minor road accident occuring every 3 minutes. Because of this roads are often closed, causing even more traffic problems.

Taxis in Dubai

Taxis are by far the most frequently used means of public transport in Dubai. You can find government operated and private cab companies to hire. Look out for the cream coloured taxis that are run by the Dubai Transport Corporation. As far as Taxis go, the prices are pretty reasonable with taxi cabs available from almost anywhere and you should find no problem if finding a cab.

River Taxis in Dubai

This is one of the more traditional methods of crossing from Bur Dubai to Deira is through abras, small boats that ferry passengers across the Dubai creek, between abra stations in Bastakiya and Bani Yas Road, for a small fee.

Dubai Metro

The Dubai Metro is currently under construction and due for completion in 2010. It will be the longest fully automated (driverless) rail network in the world. Currently the Red and Green Lines are under construction and run underground in the city centre and on elevated viaducts elsewhere. Once these first two lines have been completed, more lines planned for the future.
